The EU budget, explained: investments and contribution of each State
In 2016, 11,590 million euros of EU funds were invested in Spain.
The majority went to agriculture: agricultural spending was 6,280 million (54%), a percentage much higher than the EU average (46%). And 3,780 million (33%) were invested in regional policy, a percentage slightly higher than the European average (32%). In R&D, spending was almost 11% (1,250 million), while the EU average is 12%.
Spain contributed 9,560 million euros to the EU budget. It also collected 1,880 million euros in customs duties on behalf of the EU, of which it retained 20% in administrative fees.
Spain had to contribute an additional 445 million euros in 2016 (not included in the aforementioned figure) as a correction for the years 2014 and 2015. This is the retroactive effect of the 2014 own resources decision, which entered into force on October 1 of 2016.
