Renewable energy: ambitious objectives for Europe

As part of the clean energy package, Parliament approved changes to the renewable energy directive of the EU in November 2018 to include a new compulsory green energy target of 32% by 2030 and establish new principles on future financial support to sources of energy. renewable energy and increase the right of people to produce their own renewable energy.

According to current regulations, 20% of the EU's energy consumption must come from renewable sources such as the sun or the wind by 2020. In the case of Spain, the national target coincides with the EU average of 20%, while others such as Malta only needs to reach 10% and others like Sweden must reach 49%.

Objectives for 2030

The Heads of State and Government of the EU, represented at the European Council, agreed in 2014 that by 2030 the proportion of renewables should rise to 27% at Community level.

On November 28, the Energy Parliamentary Committee endorsed the changes to the renewable energy directive. The amendments include a more ambitious goal, of 35%, for renewable energy by 2030. The right of consumers to produce their own renewable energy is reinforced, which can not be subject to taxes of any kind provided that the electricity generated remains outside the net.
