Communications, agriculture, saving lives in the Mediterranean or tackling natural disasters would not be possible without the work of space technology.

The plenary session of the Parliament approved on April 17th a proposal by MEP Massimiliano Salini, of the European People's Party, on the European space capacity and the European Union Agency for the Space Program. On December 13, during the plenary session in Strasbourg, the Parliament approved the new space program.

The proposed financial envelope, 16,000 million euros, for the period 2021-2027 covers programs such as Galileo satellite navigation technology, the Earth observation program, Copernicus and the SSA software initiative.

"A more modern, safe, competitive, efficient and sustainable transport sector is closely connected to the space sector, the navigation system and the observation of the Earth improve the operation of transport services, which will bring many benefits at the global and European, "explained Salini.

The MEP added that more efficient traffic management will reduce emissions and combat climate change. "The increase in the use of drones will improve the deliveries and postal services, as well as better tracking of flights will reduce flight cancellations and noise," he said.

Space technology is essential for a large number of services that Europeans depend on. In addition, it plays a very important role in combating climate change, border control and the security of the citizens of the European Union. However, no member state has the ability to reach the stars by itself.

"The new space program is committed to Europe and aims to strengthen its global leadership in observation, navigation and technology research, although the EU is the second largest space power in the world, we need to encourage more and more cooperation if we want Our leadership is maintained, it is important in a context where the traditional space powers remain very active and, at the same time, new actors come in who are increasingly challenging the competitiveness of the European space sector, "said the MEP.
